This book presents a translation of jisei (poems written near the time of death) composed by samurai and samurai wives across nearly seven centuries. Whispers of the Departed presents these poems in both original form and in English translation. Each poem also includes a brief introduction to the author as well as the circumstances behind the poem.These poems served as a way for individuals to share their deepest thoughts, insights, and emotions before they departed. By bringing their final words to a wider audience, the collection seeks to honor the lives and legacies of those who wrote them, preserving their insights and memory. All of the figures in this book were facing death directly. And yet their final words are often (but not always) calm, reflective, and marked by a surprising acceptance.
